Friday Update

Here is this week's progress on Foxie

He is very very heavy and very long. I believe at this point I am 13 rounds from the neckline. WOOHOO!!!!
Here, also, is my new Kauni. It is for the Autumnal leaves sweater. The online swatches were very rich and less bright than the yarn so I will have to wait and see how this turns out.

I and my DH actually have Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed off...DS2 moves Sunday morning, he is getting excited, I am so excited for him but will miss him terribly. I am planning on stash sorting, knitting, handholding and maybe a movie with DH. I am hoping to finish a pair of socks and start another and get to the neckline on Foxie and of course wind the new Kauni

Not About Knitting, Mostly

OK, yesterday I read a post on Bev's blog about Spam and Jello and laughed myself silly. Bev pointed out every once in a while funny posts are needed. So this is my addition to the silly posts.
As you know DS2 is going off to college in a few days. A few weeks back we spent some time at IKEA shopping. He is 17 and not really into shopping so his goal was speed and efficiency. Mine was picking out good stuff. SO we started with a duvet set in this pattern

and looked for sheets, We knew they had xtra long twin plaid and got two sets at which point I wanted to return the striped duvet set and get something more coordinating with the sheets.
"Cheryl, it is fine"
I was told repeatedly, as we meandered around I kept pointing out the clashing of the duvet and the sheets and again
"Cheryl it is fine"
but they aren't even the same color,
"Cheryl I am totally colorblind and they match to me".
Ok I will stop looking but now you need to pick out a comforter,
"What are you talking about? What is the striped thing for?"
to hold a down comforter
"WHAT??!!"
and we need pillows, two for the set and one for the pillowcase.
"Wait a minute now, are you telling me we have those pillow things I am not allowed to sleep on but still need pillows?"
yes, you have two shams.
"I don't need them"
Yes they are part of the set.
"OK fine but why do I need a comforter?"
To stuff the duvet with.
"What is stuffing it now?"
Nothing it is empty
"Don't they sell this stuff all put together?"
Yes we can look...
"Nevermind I will find a comforter."
Great now we need a mattress pad
"WHY?"
So you don't sleep on the mattress
"Isn't that what sheets are for?"
This goes under the sheets
"Under the sheets, on the mattress?
" Yes"
Then why do I need sheets"
Let's just get one...Now you need a hamper/laundry basket and underbed storage boxes
"What am I storing under the bed?"
ANything that doesn't fit elsewhere.
"Can I get a wall clock?"
Sure
"WHOA how about this really cool alarm clock?"

It winds up and doesn't have a snooze
"That's ok I was going to use my cell phone alarm anyways"
But you still want the wind up?
"Yes it is cool"
So a few hours and a couple hundred dollars later we were all set.
His refrigerator has a lock, he doesn't know why food needs to be locked up but he will lock it. His plans are to fill it with Y**H** and Pi**aBite* We won't even discuss the importance of having towels and hand towels that match.
So now DH is finishing building him a fixed gear bike as he is not allowed to his truck on campus first year. DH is a trained Olympic bike mechanic with much time in the bike industry altho his career is medical.
So there you have it. I am sure after Sunday there will be tales of the moving in and setting up process. There wasn't much halabaloo with DS1 but we were new to this.

OK we are off to the orthodontist and the college book store because he did agree there was something to getting your books before the first day of class. The knitting part? He was to drive himself to the orthodontist but is sleepy and has agreed to let his mother drive him, so I will sit in the car and knit whilst he is inside. Alas it is a few extra minutes before he leaves. He is currently having chocolate cake for breakfast. Cake I made last night saying noone in the dorm would be baking for him, heehee...but as with his brother I will make brownie runs weekly. We are close enough that the brownies will arrive hot.

A Little R and R

So DH decided I had worked too much this summer. After the two weeks in Ireland the work has been non stop. He took me away to Martha's Vineyard for an overnight camping trip. He had the site for two nights but me being the mother I am needed to get back to do last minute things with DS2 as this is the last night before work. He moves in Sun morning. Anywho, we took the gear on the bicycles. Took the ferry over and me never having been before exclaimed upon arrivel, It looks just like Universal Studios(they have a JAWS area modeled after the vineyard). He just shook his head. We did some riding which was easier after the gear was off the bikes. I t was really nice, we decided we were too old to sleep in the tent on the ground again so unless the car was involved to carry the air mattress...lol. We are thinking of taking the chubby little bug car back over in the colder weather and spend an overnight in a hotel.(The bug originally lived there which is how we bought a 5 year old car with only 21,000 miles on it!)
Today I must get a few last minute things for DS2's move and am hoping to start sorting stash to get onto Ravelry.
I have also just fallen in love, again.
Lorraine has finished another Fair Isle, this is truly to die for. Long, hooded, my style all the way.. Oh do go see her site and check out the beautiful patterns she has offered for sale.
OK I am going to get my day started, actually started several hours ago as I got up to send DS1 off to work with a have a good day, got up an hour before him, waited and waited and his room is empty, hmmmm....where is my DS1? Perhaps the answer will appear later.

I will add some pics later as well

Angel Knitting Gone

I will post pics now as these items have been sent out and hopefully one received. The monkeys are made from Panda Cotton bamboo, it is a delight to work with, I got it
Loopy Ewe I bought another colorway as well to make some for me.

The tote is a free pattern from Interweave Knits The yarn is Berocco Ultra Alpaca Light, i lined it fusing two layers of cotton together to give it some stability as the Alpaca is very mooshy. This workedd out well as I wanted to make the bag but necessarily wanted to have it, LOL. DH wants one though so maybe in a bulky weight big needles and felting...Ignore the spots, it was not quite dry from steaming

FOR BEV

Ok here it is .... Bev and I were working on Foxie for Dale KAL which started in January, LOL. I was all gung ho and wanted to make Foxie for DS2...as you can see it came to a halt but close enough to finish with a little effort. We agreed to post pics and Bev has so I have been shamed(hanging head)into posting. LOL, just kidding. Actually should be running out the door to work right now but I know my priorities :)

HSS2

So my pal for Hogwarts Sock Swap 2 is a Hufflepuffer,as I was before, but I retested into Ravenclaw....anywho, I tried this yarn from Lisa Souza, it is amazing..I thought it would be a nice tist on the coloring. I love the pattern, the design shown reminds me of a castle turret and a school shield. I have some other Lisa yarn but have never used it. That was a mistake for sure. This sock is a relatively quick knit, only two rows of pattern to the main leg, I am enjoying it, now that my Angel knitting is finally done and mailed. I ahve so much knitting to get caught up on but am confident I will. I will post FO pics of the sock when the time comes.

KAUNI

OK so this is 2 hanks of Kauni pre and post winding. I tried to get the balls to start at the colors I wanted hence the little ball of misplaced color. The hanks are huge and there is no way to wind them into one ball unless you have a large winder. So we shall see how this works. I have told myself I cannot cast on until 4 pairs of socks are completed and at least one sweater has major work caught up. The thing is ordered two other colorways for the Autumn Leaf cardigan. The yarn is surpringly soft. I am really pleased with it. Prewinding you would think there was 3 or 4 colors but I have counted 6 changes.

Looky Here ANOTHER Post!!

OK I seem to be typing more than knitting....this week's delivery from Loopy Ewe (truly they seem to be weekly) is this lovely yarn and a LE small zippered tote. Two more Sock Duets to add to my stash, I will have to update that pic. I also have the lovely Anniversary Yarn from JKnits and Fleece Artist in Midnight. I believe I have some other Fleece Artist I will team this with for a Chevron Scarf perhaps...

OK Now BEWARE, if you are as opposed to 100% acrylic for clothing as I am avert your eyes. Do as I did and peek gently through your fingers. This is Berocco COMFORT. Their new answer to acrylic , it is 50/50 acrylic and nylon and machine washable and one of the softest yet bouncy yarns I have felt.

DS2 is off to college in 16 days and I am very much feeling empty nest although DS 1 lives with us and Nephew's GF lives with us and DS1 GF is always here...perhaps because he is my baby(we had 4 or 5 miscarriages after him, both boys are my DH stepDSs) Perhaps because we did not think we would celebrate his first birthday and now he is a fine young man. Perhaps because he is my monkeyboy. (Taking a minute to wipe my eyes)...anyways...I plan on knitting him a sweater he can trash at school(though I don't believe he will). I have the design all picked out in my mind and hope to knit on this soon and send it to him in October in a care package. He is my artsy boy, photography major, totally colorblind, LOL. He generally wears striped or plaid shoes and at IKEA the other day while dorm shopping he had to reassure me that the two sets of plaid sheets we purchased would be hunky dory under the striped comforter set, LOL. He loves life even with all he has been through medically and was enthralled by the purchase of an old fashioned wind up alarm clock. He will have fun at school, his friend is his roommate and early acceptance and quick replies to deadlines have them in a double only. His other new cool thing is a tallish refrigerator for his room that has a lock. He is not sure why he would need to lock his fridge but he is planning to, LOL. I though in off season it would be a great yarn holder especially because it locks! Anywho.....so I am waiting for Ravelry to let me in and then I will seriously have to account for my stash, though it isn't as bad as I believe. Much goes out in swaps and I am mostly down to keeping my LE purchases and yarn I receive in swaps.
OK I must color the gray out of my hair and get ready for work yet again. Tonight finish the intricate stag bag and mail it to the very patient dear lady who got a flaky pal. I have the lining fabric already so hopefully Monday it will hit the road.

Fall Felted Bag Exchange

Questionnaire
Okay so here’s the questionnaire for this round! Please post this on your blog no later than August 27th! Keep in mind that the more complete you are, the more it helps your pal begin to get to know you and make a bag that you'll truly enjoy!
How long have you been knitting or crocheting? How did you learn? or from whom?

Approximately 40 years, I had an aunt that gave me little hexagon cardboard boxes of knitting things every Christmas, they contained maybe 6 or 12 feet of each of three colors of yarn.. After a few years I taught myself.
What was your first felted object, and why did you decide to try felting?

Actually it was a bag I made this past Novemeber for an exchange.

I had two or three items knit and ready to be felted just had never done it.

What are your favorite colors? Any you hate?

Purples, burgundy, greens, jewelish tones this time of year. Not a big pastels person.
What are your favorite styles\types of bags? (Long straps? Short handles? Handbags? Totes? Embellished? Plain? Include links to patterns or photos if you’d like – give your pal an idea of what you enjoy!)

Oh boy..I love Noni and received quite a lovely one I use every day..
I like when the straps are felted and part of the knitting. Some embellishment is fine. I will include links later.

What handbag or bag are you carrying today? Do you use a separate bag to carry your knitting?

I use the Noni a lot and a striped felted tote I received from a pal, it is lovely and large.
My handbag is a black leather although I did just get a Maruca.

I love this bag though, truly I do...
What other things do you enjoy knitting or crocheting?

Aran, Fair Isle, stranded, lace, you name it
What sort of needles do you enjoy working with? (straights vs circs, bamboo vs aluminum)

I really like circs but am enjoying tremendously some retro straights I received in a swap, actually it was Monkey Sock Swap 2 they are glorious.

What’s one project you’ve not yet tried but are dying to make?

Entralac
What’s one yarn you’ve not yet tried but are dying to work with?

I've used just about all of them...
What other hobbies do you have? Do you spin? Sew? Garden?

No spinning, sewing, any crafting, no gardening
Besides yarn, do you collect anything?

Mr Potato Heads, Eiffel Towers, antique glass
What kind of goodies do you enjoy? Sweets? Salty? Anything you hate or are allergic to?

I will pass on this question, I don't need any sweets.
Do you have any kiddos? (Furry kind count!)

DS-23 DS-17
What kind of project best personifies you and why?

Aran knit or Dale...just what I am doing most often other than socks
What is your favorite part of Autumn? You can also share a special Autumn memory if you'd prefer!

Leaves changing color, I was married November 24 beautiful fall wedding and honeymooned in Maine.
Tell us 3 things you would do if you won 10 million dollars in the lottery.

Buy DSs and GF and DH new cars, pay inlaws rent for a few years, build a house in Maine and open a yarn store

No biggie...there are bookstores I can visit and if I am not mistaken there is a new VK out..again I digress.... I went to Sh--s, not sure I can write the name, LOL, and they didn't have the new yogurt I just saw that gets rid of some cholesteral but they did have the new Interweave Knits...hmmmmmmmmmmm

Caught Up and Over the Top

OK, I have gone from no posts to 5 or 6 in the past few days, read on if you dare or are bored...LOL...

So if you read the post about the Yarn Harlot , I mention the sweater, Kauni, Ruth's Cardigan. Well I caught the bug. I remembered Lorraine had started one a few months back and tracked down her yarn supplier and ordered yarn. It was a bit frightening as it is ordered in DKK,Denmark money and the order was over 340,00DKK!!!! Turned out to be less than$60. Half of which is shipping. So Hopefully this will take a few weeks to get here, during which time several pairs of socks will be completed and a few old sweaters further along. With the warmer weather slowly moving out, DS2 Dale should make a reappearance and get finished.

UPDATE I ordered 10 hours ago and just received an email the yarn has already shipped!! WOW!!!

One More Yarn Club

I while ago one of the first swaps I was in was a Colorswap...my pal to spoil was Jana. A truly lovely person, you could always feel the excitment in her words. I sent Jana some sock yarn as she mentioned in her blog she hadn't knit socks but would like to. Well, I feel like a proud momma because since then Jana has opened her own studio, White Oak Studio has the most amazing line of yarn which she calls TVyarn. Jana dyes her yarn in colorways reminiscent of tv programs. SHe frequently has contests to come up with new colorways and now has started a yarn club. Can you even imagine that? The first three month series is Chick Flick Movies!! You can sign up(if there are spots open) through her ETSY site. Please do browse her yarn selection at least, I have sample knit and knit with her yarns and they are exquisite.

Bad Me I Forgot These

This is the tote I made for my pal in the International Tote Exchange 4. The yarn is Berocco Ultra Alpaca. I love the softness of the yarn but it always takes so long to felt. I beaded the flower a bit for interest.

I received this beautiful little tote for the ITE4. Isn't it sweet? The zipper and lining are perfect. My pal, Stacie did a wonderful job. Do you see the wooden zipper pull?

I sent this bag along to Anne, my pal for SPring

Felted Tote Exchange,it is a Garnstudio pattern made from Eskimo yarn. I lined it with an adorable dragonfly print fabric.

These were the lovely goodies I received from my pal Robert from the Punk Rock Mini Gift Exchange. The first PRGE was a blast and a mini was run until the Fall repeat. Robert sent me such beautiful things and all the way from the Netherlands!!! I have never had a male swap pal before nor an international one. I am still waiting to hear if Robert's package arrived at his doorstep yet...

OK, I am attempting to get caught up as it would seem the summer of nonstop working is drawing to an end. So much to talk about, patterns, Yarn Harlot, yarns, KALs, Swaps...

OK ,so I think you can see the pic below of Stephanie Pearl McPhee, the Yarn Harlot . I saw her on Aug 2 at a Borders Book Store in Burlington, MA. My final tally for extra hours worked beyond my normal 144 for the month was 156, so August 2 I thought I deserved a break. I almost didn't go as I was tired, but I am glad I did. Talk about funny, and I could relate to every anecdote, every quirk. I once attended a conference in Chicago for the field I am in, It was the North American Conference and tens of thousands of attendants from all the world, speaking in many languages were there. It was the neatest thing to know that everyone there no matter where they were from knew what I did for a living and understood it. Seeing Stephanie was very much like that on a smaller scale. So many knitters, so many Monkey Socks, the Ravelry folks were there and if I can ever figure out who she is there was a designer from Knitty I believe. I begged off having my pic done with Stephanie and apologized if that insulted her. She was humble and gracious and just very cool. Laid out on her table is the Kauin sweater which so many are working on now. If you have the opportunity to see her, I would recommend going. It was a lot of fun. I had her sign two books, one for me and one for my pal in the Virtual Vacation Swap because if she vacationed here surely she would have gone to see the Yarn Harlot. The travelling sock was there, I brought my Karen's Glove to work on. The glove received many ooohs and aahhhs. It reminded me how much I enjoy the glove and it has moved up on the WIP to become FO list.

Next, I received an email one day telling me the pattern for the July Sock Club sock from Chameleon Colorworks was not mailed with the yarn. Sock Club?? Did I sign up?? Hmmm...yes indeed I did and am I glad!! This sock is done from the toe up,new for me, and is color stranded. Now I do much in the way of multi color knitting but not a sock. hmm...how long should the floats be carried? After 8 attempts to cast on and knit the first row using the figure 8 cast on I was successful. I adore the colors. The second sock is worked in the opposite color combination if I so desire. Isn't it neat?

Speaking of sock clubs see the yarn on the top, that is the sock yarn from the Loopy Ewe Sock Club for the Fall sock. It is Claudia Handpainted Yarn in a beautiful exclusive colorway for the LE. As always, Sheri included little extras, a small accessories tote, the most adorable stitch markers,(speaking of see below) and a pattern for the yarn. I have had several deliveries since last blogging about yarn but this is some of the LE stash that has not been put away. There is Yarn Love in Flirt, Interlacements in Turkish Carpet(so regal),Knittery in Lakeside Flora, sKNITches selfstriping in Bearsdley, Dream in Color in Spring Tickle. Not pictured I also received CHerry Tree Hill in Winterberry and Wild Cherry as well as Dream in Color in Cocoa Kiss. If you have never visited the Loopy Ewe you simply must. Sheri carries the most exquisite yarns and is the nicest lady.

Stitch markers..I have been on a little frenzy buying stitch markers from an Etsy Dealer, weeones She designs stm from polymer clay and they are the most awesome little pieces of art. She is actually designing me a set of Boston themed stm for my Pal in the VVS. I have recently received these

Too too cute, don't you think?

I have joined the Wheat Ear Cable Yoke sweater KAL. This is pattern in Fall 2007 Interweave Knits and I really liked it. I find unless I join the KALS and see the reminder in the sidebar I forget what I want to make. So WEBS is having their end of summer sale and I got this worsted weight Cascade Pima Silk to make the sweater. It seemed very grey on the screen but when I received it , is much more olive drab. I do still love it but was trying to move away from the greens. Some things are just meant to be. I also believe I purchased far too much, LOL, I guess it won't hurt to have the extra to add to the length.

Interweave Knits had a hurt book book sake a few weeks back and I was fortunate enough to get these three books at a reduction.

A really talented knitter pal o mine Lorraine Condetta designs the most exquisite Fair Isle sweaters. I have been stalking her waiting for the patterns to become available as up til now you could only get them in kits from She Ewe Knits . Well, at long last, Lorraine is a sweetie, I love reading her blog and "hearing" about her dieting success, her family goings on and her of course her knitting news. She has designed a gorgeous Aran sweater which I am trying to stop drooling over. Do visit her site and enjoy the beauty of her creations.

Gosh I love Duet Sock Yarn!!! This is my latest acquisition....I was also sooooooo lucky to get into the Lucky Lurkers Sock Club!!! I missed the original sign-up but Angela hinted there would be sporadic openings through July. I got in!!!! Do visit A Swell Yarn ShopThe yarns are amazing and like a lot of my favorite yarns , Duets Yarn is offered at Loopy Ewe

  • Well now...WHAT do we have here? I waited a long time for my Sundara yarn The dealer dyes in small quantities and is very busy. But is well worth the wait. This glorious colorway is called Sweet Briar Rose. It is magnificent. The pattern I ordered came in this lovely lavendar envelope. Cool! One last entry for this blog. I have been diligently working on an Angel Tote for a lovely lady and nearing completion. This is the Intricate Stag Tote a free pattern from Interweave Knits It is made from Berroco Ultra Light Alpaca. I LOVE it!! DH is already asking for it in 4 panels in wool to be felted...what can I do but make it soon for my biggest supporter?

So if you have made it this far you probably need a cup of coffe...thanks for reading. Tomorrow, FO pictures......
